Inverter generators are usually quieter than open-frame portable generators because the engine can slow down when the load is light. But the decibel numbers in product listings are hard to compare: makers quote them at different loads, often at no load or a quarter load, and rarely say how far away they measured. The five below show that problem clearly, so read the load condition next to every number.
Every specification on this page comes from the manufacturer’s own product page, checked on 26 October 2026. We have not used these products ourselves, so the picks are based on published specifications only.
Before comparing numbers, read how to compare generator noise ratings, generator decibel ratings explained and how inverter generators reduce noise.
How we chose these
- Inverter design, with clean power for electronics stated by the maker.
- A published decibel figure, with the load condition where the maker gives one.
- Running and surge watts, weight and runtime listed.
- Carbon monoxide shutdown built in.
None of these makers states the measuring distance in the product text. A figure at no load is not comparable with one at quarter load, and both will be lower than at full load.
Comparison table
| Generator | Rated noise (maker) | Running / surge watts | Weight | Tank / runtime | CO shutdown | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DuroMax XP2300iH | 52 dB (load not stated) | 1,800 / 2,300 W gas; 1,700 / 2,150 W propane | 50.6 lb dry | 1.1 gal; 13 h at 25%, 7 h at 50% (gas) | Yes, CO sensor shutdown | 3 years |
| WEN 56250iX | 65 dB at quarter load | 1,900 / 2,500 W | 37.5 lb | 1 gal; up to 4.4 h at half load | Yes, WEN Watchdog | 3 years |
| WEN 56280iX | 60 dB at no load | 2,250 / 2,800 W | 45 lb | 1.58 gal; up to 9 h at half load | Yes, WEN Watchdog | 3 years |
| WEN DF280iX | 60 dB at no load | 2,250 / 2,800 W gas; 2,000 / 2,800 W propane | 45 lb | 1.58 gal, up to 9 h at half load; 13.9 h on a 20 lb propane tank | Yes, WEN Watchdog | 3 years |
| WEN 56432iX | 62 dB at quarter load | 3,600 / 4,500 W | 53 lb | 1.27 gal; up to 5.6 h at half load | Yes, WEN Watchdog | 3 years |
Decibel figures are as each maker publishes them. Only the WEN 56250iX and 56432iX share the same stated condition (quarter load).
1. DuroMax XP2300iH (dual fuel): for the lowest quoted decibels and long propane runtime
DuroMax lists 52 dB for the XP2300iH, the lowest figure here, but its spec table does not say at what load or distance, so it cannot be compared directly with the WEN figures. It runs on gasoline or propane, with demand-based variable idle, and DuroMax lists 38 hours at 25% load on propane with a 20-pound tank or larger.
- Outlets: two 5-20R, one RV-ready L5-30R, USB-A and USB-C; parallel cable included (DuroMax).
- EPA certified; DuroMax lists it as not CARB certified or 50-state compliant.
Pros: lowest quoted noise; very long propane runtime; parallel cable in the box.
Cons: noise figure has no stated load; not CARB compliant.

2. WEN 56250iX: for the lightest unit
The 56250iX is the lightest generator here at 37.5 pounds. WEN quotes 65 decibels at quarter load from its 80cc engine, and the fuel shut-off lets the carburetor run dry before storage. Two WEN inverters can be linked with WEN’s parallel kit, sold separately.
- WEN Watchdog CO sensor shuts the generator off if dangerous CO levels are detected (WEN).
Pros: lightest; fuel shut-off; parallel capable.
Cons: highest quoted noise here, though at quarter load; smallest tank.

3. WEN 56280iX: for longer runtime at camp
The 56280iX steps up to a 98cc engine with 2,250 running watts and a 1.58-gallon tank that WEN rates for up to 9 hours at half load. WEN quotes 60 decibels, but at no load, so expect more with appliances running.
- Fuel shut-off and parallel capability, per WEN.
Pros: much longer runtime than the 56250iX; parallel capable.
Cons: noise quoted at no load only.

4. WEN DF280iX (dual fuel): for running on propane too
The DF280iX is the dual-fuel version of the 56280iX: the same 98cc engine and 60 dB no-load figure, but it also runs on propane, where WEN lists 2,000 running watts and up to 13.9 hours at half load on a 20-pound tank.
- Gasoline: 2,800 surge and 2,250 rated watts; propane: 2,800 surge and 2,000 rated watts (WEN).
Pros: propane option for long runtime; CO shutdown.
Cons: slightly less running power on propane.

5. WEN 56432iX: for RVs and bigger loads
With a 181cc engine and 3,600 running watts, the 56432iX is the most powerful generator here, and WEN describes it as RV-ready. WEN quotes 62 decibels at quarter load, which is lower than its 2,500-watt model at the same load condition.
- Parallel capable with a WEN 120V kit; fuel shut-off (WEN).
Pros: most power here; RV-ready; quieter than the 56250iX at the same quarter-load condition, per WEN.
Cons: heaviest unit here; shorter runtime than the 2,800-watt WENs.

Practical tips
